Light is the body's primary circadian signal. It tells your brain whether it's time to be alert, to wind down, or to sleep — and it does this through a specialised set of retinal cells that are most sensitive to blue-wavelength light (peaking at around 480nm).
When those cells detect blue light in the evening, they suppress melatonin — the hormone that drives sleep onset — delaying and disrupting your natural sleep cycle. When they detect warm, red, or amber light, melatonin production continues uninterrupted.
The LUM8 lighting range is designed around this biology. Each product has a specific role in your day-to-evening light rhythm. This guide shows you how to use them together.

Your Lighting Day
A daily rhythm from wake to sleep
Research shows that morning bright light (within the first hour of waking) triggers your cortisol peak, anchors your circadian clock, and prepares your body to produce melatonin at the right time that evening. Evening blue light does the opposite — exposure to blue-enriched light in the hours before bed measurably delays melatonin onset and disrupts sleep quality.
Day Mode — Full Spectrum
Bright, full-spectrum light supports alertness and anchors your circadian clock. Use Day Mode from the moment you rise. If natural sunlight is available within the first hour of waking, prioritise that — indoor Day Mode light supports this effect throughout the morning and day.
Late Afternoon Mode — Reduced Blue
As your day winds down, begin transitioning your environment. Late Afternoon Mode reduces blue light and shifts the spectrum warmer, signalling to your body that the day is ending. Switch when natural light outside begins to soften — typically late afternoon.
Evening Mode — Zero Blue Light
Switch all LUM8 globes and downlights to Evening Mode at least 2 hours before your intended sleep time. Research shows melatonin typically begins rising approximately 2 hours before your natural sleep window — blue-free light during this period supports that rise rather than suppressing it.
Motion Night Light — Red Only
Red light sits well above the 480nm range where melatonin suppression occurs. Your LUM8 Motion Night Light uses red light only, so navigating hallways and bathrooms at night won't interrupt your sleep cycle or require your eyes to readjust to darkness.

Three-mode circadian lighting
The LUM8 Circadian Globe and Circadian Downlight use the same three-mode system — built around your body's natural light requirements across the day. Both products cycle through their modes using your existing wall switch, with no app or remote required.
Day
Full spectrum light for focus, energy and morning alertness.
Late Afternoon
Reduced blue spectrum. Begins the gentle transition toward evening.
Evening

How to Switch Modes
Both the Globe and Downlight cycle through modes using your standard wall switch — no remote, no app needed.
- Turn the light on — it will resume in whichever mode it was last set to
- Turn the switch off, then on again quickly — the light advances to the next mode
- Repeat to cycle: Mode 1 → Mode 2 → Mode 3 → Mode 1
- The mode is remembered — next time you switch on, it returns to the same setting
Globe — Placement Tips
- Living areas where you spend evenings — lounge, dining room
- Bedrooms — replace existing bedside lamps or ceiling globe
- Home office — supports alertness during the day, winds down in the evening
- Any standard E27 light fitting (screw base)
Downlight — Placement Tips
- Bedrooms — ceiling downlight replacement for full circadian benefit

- Must be installed by a licensed electrician
The LUM8 Downlight is not compatible with dimmer switches. The built-in LED driver uses a precision switching circuit for each mode. When connected to a phase-cut dimmer (the most common type of dimmer switch), this circuit creates electromagnetic interference — working against the clean, low-EMF environment your LUM8 lighting is designed to support. It may also cause flickering and reduce the lifespan of the product.
Always wire your LUM8 Downlight to a standard on/off switch. The three built-in modes eliminate any need for external dimming.
Note for Globe users: The Globe does not have this restriction — it uses a standard E27 socket and is controlled via your wall switch cycling. Do not fit it into a dimmer-controlled circuit either, as the mode cycling relies on standard on/off switching.
Wind Down Reading Light
Blue-free bedside and reading light
The LUM8 Wind Down Reading Light is designed for your evening wind-down — reading, journalling, and quiet time before sleep. All three of its colour modes are 100% blue light free, so you can use it close-up without suppressing melatonin production.
Amber
Warm amber light. Gentle on the eyes for low-light reading.
Red
Deep red light. Minimal visual stimulation — ideal for winding down.
Mixed
Amber and red combined. A warm balance for reading and writing.
Controls — Reading Light
- Press once — turn on / cycle to the next colour mode
- Hold the button — adjust brightness. Continue holding to dim further or brighten. Release when you reach the desired level.
- Press and hold to turn off — or use the button to cycle through and off
- Charges via USB-C — charge until the indicator light turns off
Placement Tips
- Clip to your headboard or bedside shelf for reading in bed
- Clip to the back of a book for hands-free reading
- Bedside table — positioned toward your book or journal, away from eyes
- Travel — compact and USB-C rechargeable, ideal for hotel use
Best Practice
- Use in amber or mixed mode for general reading — easier on the eyes
- Switch to red mode for the final 20–30 minutes before sleep
- Keep brightness low in the evening — the dimmer the better for melatonin
- Avoid pointing it directly at your eyes — angle toward the page
Motion Night Light
Automatic red light for nighttime navigation
The LUM8 Motion Night Light emits soft red light only. Red wavelengths sit well above the 480nm range that activates the melatonin-suppressing ipRGC system in your eyes — which means navigating your home at night without disrupting your sleep cycle or your body's natural melatonin production.
The built-in PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor activates the light when it detects movement, and turns it off automatically when the area is still. No switches needed — it works silently in the background.
Where to Place It
- Hallways — the most common night-time navigation path
- Bathrooms — avoids turning on overhead lighting during night visits
- Bedrooms — near the door or along the floor for subtle orientation
- Stairways — mount at the top or bottom landing
- Children's rooms — safe red light that won't wake them or affect sleep
Placement Tips
- Mount at approximately 0.8–1.2 metres height for optimal PIR motion detection
- The magnetic base attaches to any flat surface
- Avoid pointing directly into a mirror — reflected light can trigger false activations
- Do not place behind a door that opens across it — the sensor needs a clear line of view
- Charges via USB-C — charge before first use
Why red light matters at night: White or cool light during a night-time bathroom visit is enough to measurably suppress melatonin and delay return to deep sleep. Red light — sitting at 630nm and above — has minimal activation of the melanopsin photoreceptors that drive melatonin suppression. Your LUM8 Motion Night Light is specifically red for this reason.
Tips & Quick Reference
Making the most of your lighting range
💡 Set a light alarm. Try switching your globes and downlights to Evening Mode at the same time every night. Consistency reinforces your circadian signal — your body begins anticipating sleep at the same time each evening.
💡 Start earlier than you think. Blue light suppression effects accumulate over the evening. Research shows that light exposure 3–7 hours before bed can delay melatonin onset — even at normal room-light levels. Earlier is better.
💡 Your phone is the weak link. LUM8 lighting creates the right environment, but screen use in Evening Mode will partially offset the benefit. Consider screen-free time after switching to Evening Mode, or use your device's night shift / warm screen mode.
💡 The reading light in red mode is close-range — keep it low. When a light source is close to the eyes (bedside reading), even a dim warm light has more effect than a brighter light across the room. Keep brightness low and angle it toward the page.
💡 Children respond even more strongly to evening light. Kids' melatonin is suppressed by light at even lower intensities than adults. The Motion Night Light's red-only output makes it one of the safest options for nighttime room use.
